Game Brainstorm

 Welcome to my Game Brainstorm:

1.  To The Finish Line And Beyond...

As we all should know by now I am not a gamer at all and have little to no experience when it comes to gaming. So I found thinking of possible game ideas hard to start off with. But after revisiting my past of iPhone & iPad games I finally came up with a few original game ideas. My first game idea was inspired by Mario Cart, Mario Cart is a game that I have played a few times before, I think the Mario Cart game is very detailed and well developed, I know mine will not be even close to this. My idea is to create a game with 1 racing track, with a nice surrounding maybe of hills and water and the aim for the player is to get around the course in the quickest time possible.  There would be an option to increase your speed but this may purpose a challenge because I would like the racing track to be up on a height, so if you go too fast you may fall off!! If you fall off in this game you lose. I would like to have a few cars at the start line, this gives the player an option to pick which car they would like to race. I would also like to have a timer at the top of the screen to show the player how fast or slow they may be going. I am hoping that I will be able to create this game on Unity.  Below is a images that I found when doing my research on my game idea & on Mario kart. This was the how Mario Cart looked when it first started out, nothing like it is today. This is my inspiration behind my own car racing game. It’s amazing to remember that even though Mario cart is so popular now, and how amazing the graphics are now, it all had to start out somewhere. When you first create a game it won't be as amazing as games that have been developed for years on end but it will be a starting point. This is a link to a video that I watched showing you how Mario cart looks to a player.

2. Roly Poly...

My next game idea is came to me after some research on another old game I used to play. The game was played a hand held game, and it was made out of wood. My nan used to have one and I used to have endless hours of fun playing it but also getting frustrated when I could not get it to work. The game was called a Ball In A Maze, it was a wooden circle that you would hold which had a maze carved out, the objection of the game was to get the 3 silver balls to the centre of the circle, Which was quite hard because when you thought you had 1 ball in position you would have to move the game to get the rest of the silver balls to the centre and this would cause the ball to move and fall back out. This is a 2D game however and I will be basing my 3D game off this game. The idea I have for my own original game idea that I will be making is to build a tall maze with 1 exit (instead of a place in the middle) The perspective of the player will be eye level with the maze so there will be no way of cheating your way through it and at the start of the maze you will have 1 ball that you will have to move. The aim of the game is to move the ball through the maze until you can find a way out. I may end up putting multiple dead ends to make the game interesting as well as multiple maze exits to be nice to the players. Below is the image of the 2D game that I have taken inspiration from as well as a 3D game that is available which is a 3D maze escape. This will be images that I will reference to throughout the game designing process. I look forward to seeing how I can develop this game.  This is a link to a video showing you how the maze game Labyrinth works which is a game I researched as part of this idea.

3. Coin Collector...

My 3rd game idea is another car game. After some research I decided to base my game off of an app that I used to play quite a lot. The game is Subway Surfers. The idea of this game is to run through obstacles without getting caught. There are trains traveling towards you and you must move out of there way, jump on top or them, or duck below obstacles, all while collecting coins. The idea I have for my own game is based along these lines but there would be no "moving" obstacles. The course would be a road which has many obstacles in its path, the player can choose to avoid them or there could be an option to go through little ones. There would also be coins along the path that the vehicle must pick up in order to win the game. Sone of the coins may be placed in tricky spots so you would have to move quickly to retrieve them. The aim of this game would be to drive down the path as quickly as you can while avoiding the obstacles & collecting all of the coins. I think this game could be good if I developed it some more and was able to create it in unity too.  Below is an image of the game Subway Surfers in which I based my game idea off. You can see in the image that the coins are placed in a certain way to get you to move quickly to avoid getting hit, this would be an aspect I would like to bring into my own game, and make it harder for the player to collect all of the coins. For now I'm not sure what is possible with Unity, but I think it might be cool to have a coin tally up on the top of the game so the player knows how many coins they have collected and have left to collect too. 4.  Down on the farm...

My final game idea is a game inspired by another game I used to play called HayDay. The idea of the game was to farm and collect your own produce, sell it and move up the levels. It was essentially a game where you could build your own little farm and run it yourself. I thought this would be a good idea to base my game off of but on a very minimal scale. The idea I have for my game is a small farming game where the player has a plot of land and they are able to find seeds around the place and sow them in their lot of land, and when the crop grows they will be able to cut it down. For every bit of crop that they cut they would earn coins. This is just a basic idea but would be interested in seeing how this game could develop. Maybe it could have different levels, more crops to plant other than grass. One level could make the player build their own house or maybe they could have a tractor to drive around to make collecting the seeds easier. Below is an image from my research, it is off the game HayDay.  As you can see there is an option in this game to grow your farm and make it as big as you want, you can buy items in the shop to make your farm even better. I am looking forward to creating one of these game ideas as part of my project this semester. Any game I create will be basic but as long as it works and a player is able to play it and enjoy it then I will be happy.  This is a link to a video of this game HayDay.

  1. Hello again Aoibhe! I went to your most recent blog first and seen you have chosen the Roly Poly game so wanted to see what your other ideas were! I think it's a great idea because I feel like most peoples blogs I have seen (including my own) have had a lot of similar ideas whereas I have not seen anybody else do this. You also put a lot of thought into each game idea so I'm sure you made the right choice for you! I hope it works out well for you. Sean

  2. Hey Aoibhe, I really like the ideas you came up with here the games you picked out are all very good although I guess the Ball in a Maze type is similar to tell little toy watch kids used to get or maybe it was just me. I have not read the follow up on this blog but I did see you went and decided on the Roly Poly idea. I good on succeeding with that idea it looks fun. -Tochi

  3. Hey Aoibhe,
All your four Ideas are well thought off and interesting, I had say you decided the game you want to go with at this point but I am fascinated by your second Idea, It looks fun. I hope you can that pull that off.
I am sure you will be able to do it if that's the one you went with because pretty much all the skills required we've already learned in Unity , player controller, moving the player left and right, positioning objects, Camera positioning and so on !
    Good luck Aoibhe

  4. Hi Aoibhe , I hope you are doing well , the ideas that you have put together are really interesting to me. My favourite ought to be the puzzle "Roly Poly" kind of theme as puzzle games are really fun and challenging. I think that if a game is more challenging it would continue to draw the player towards it to fully complete it helping the game become more popular. But also the racing "Mario Kart" spinoff also interested me as these games are really popular and I'd say fun to make.
