Game Vision Statement

In this blog I will be sharing my Game Vision Statement, I am really excited to see where this game will go and how it will develop from just an idea on paper to a fully functioning game that can be played by many.

What Is Roly Poly?

Roly Poly is a Maze game that is sure bring out everyone’s competitive side.

How Will the game Roly Poly be played?

Roly Poly will be a game in which your aim as the player is to push the silver ball through the maze to find an exit. You will be able to move the silver ball forwards, backwards, right & left. You will see that the maze will contain multiple exits making it easier for you as the player as you won’t just have to rely on there being one exit to the maze, but with this there will also be a number of dead ends in the maze creating an element of fun.(maybe anger for others) The maze will be viewed at eye level, this means the maze will not be visible to you and all that you will see is the silver ball and the walls of the course. This will hopefully cause it to be a fun game and will also avoid people from cheating their way through the game. This 3D game will challenge you but may also frustrate you too.  You will be racing against the clock with this game, the timer will begin when you press start and will end when you find an exit and push the silver ball out of the maze. The timer will be taken in real time and whatever time you get with this game is how long it took you to complete the maze. There will be no "set time" given for how quickly you should finish the course, the time will vary from player to player. This will bring out some peoples competitive side as they will want to finish the maze in the quickest time possible.

What Inspired the Game Roly Poly?

The inspiration for my game Roly Poly was actually based of an old wooden game I used to play.  The game was played as a hand held game, my nan used to have one and it used to bring us all endless hours of fun playing it, but also would lead to frustration when I could not get it to work properly. This game was called a "Ball In A Maze", it was a wooden circle that you would hold which had a maze carved out, the objection of the game was to get the 3 silver balls to the centre of the circle, Which was quite hard because when you thought you had 1 ball in position you would have to move the game to get the rest of the silver balls to the centre and this would cause the ball to move and fall back out.

This was the concept that I based my own game off of. However my game will be quite different, for starters my game will be 3D on a screen and this game was 2D Handheld game.

What is the Genre of this Game?

The Genre of my game Roly Poly will be a puzzle game. According to the dictionary a puzzle is something that can cause (someone) to feel confused because they cannot understand something. This game will be a game of trial and error, you will have to navigate through the maze and try and find the exits as fast as you can. This puzzle game may lead you to become confused as to where the exits are or maybe frustrated because of how long it taking you to complete the course, but this is all part of the fun.

What emotions will the player feel when playing this Game?

I hope my game can evoke emotion of some sort. I hope it will be an enjoyable and fun game to play, I hope it will have an element of competition to it as well as frustration. However the frustration will all be worth it in the end when you complete the maze. An element of relief will also be there when you as the player finally complete the maze and find an exit no matter how long it takes you will still be glad that you were able to complete the maze!

  1. Hi Aoibhe, I love this game idea! It sounds really fun and I can imagine those with not a-lot of patience would get slightly angry with this but I guess that's part of the fun. I used to play a sort of similar game when I was younger. I wonder if you should possibly have different levels within the game? Perhaps Level 1 being easy to navigate through and as you progress through the levels it gets harder? Just a suggestion! Can't wait to give this game a go hopefully!

  2. Hi Aoibhe
Love your idea I'm doing a puzzle game as well I how yours turns out well . Its an interesting Idea that you've come up with basing it off an old real world game like Ball In A Maze I just wish you had put an image of the game in the post so I could see what it looks like. Keep it up hope it worrks.

  3. Hi Aoibhe~
I am very impressed how you planned and explained the whole process of your game! As you already know I am also doing a very similar to your puzzle game but the difference is that I will have a more forest themed and only one exit. In contrast to my game, I really like how your game have few exits around the maze making it easy for the players to find their way out. However, there will be more dead ends as well which making it more exciting and thrilling for the players.

I also think that placing the vision of the player to eye level would really increase the competitive side of our players! I wonder how many exits and dead ends will you put in your maze. What would be your maze look like? Is going to be a wooden style similar to your inspiration game? How can you also play against other players? would it be a two player or vice versa? (where player 2 have to wait till player 1 finish the game)

I also have some advice for you that may help you improve your game. You could try add some collectable coins or special rewards to your game where it can help the player reduce the longer time of their game if they didn't complete the maze quickly.

I hope that my Tag Feedback would help you create your game better!! :)

  4. Hi Aoibhe,
I am so impressed with your Vison statement. I think you have planned out your game and explained it very well. You already know my idea and we have some parrillas but not many. The differences being your timer counts up mine counts down etc.. I really like how with your game there are going to be multiple exits and dead ends I think they are really cool ways introduce challenge to the player. I also find it so fascinating you got your inspiration from a real world game.

I wonder how many exits you are planning on putting on the outer most layer of the maze. As that will obviously make the level of challenge vary a lot and how many dead ends would there be, they would have to balance each other out.

I do have some advise for you that could help you to improve your game. This is more so for atmosphere and I don't actually know if you have thought about it but i noticed you didn't mention about music maybe if you added royalty free music that's kinda fast paced it could just add to the atmosphere.

I hope my Tag Feedback can help you! I can't wait to see ten finale product.
