Games MDA

The first paper that I read was, Design, Dynamics & Experience (DDE) for Game Design - https://tudublin-my.sharepoint.com/personal/shaun_ferns_tudublin_ie/_layouts/15/onedrive.aspx?id=%2Fpersonal%2Fshaun%5Fferns%5Ftudublin%5Fie%2FDocuments%2FITB%20Modules%2Fmultimedia%20development%201%2F2020files%2FWeek%2005%20readings%2FFromMDAtoDDE%5Ffinal%5Fpreprint%2Epdf&parent=%2Fpersonal%2Fshaun%5Fferns%5Ftudublin%5Fie%2FDocuments%2FITB%20Modules%2Fmultimedia%20development%201%2F2020files%2FWeek%2005%20readings&originalPath=aHR0cHM6Ly90dWR1Ymxpbi1teS5zaGFyZXBvaW50LmNvbS86YjovZy9wZXJzb25hbC9zaGF1bl9mZXJuc190dWR1Ymxpbl9pZS9FZUxZUFplSDVrWkZzdjhaMW9BSkJsa0I3UjdPZTJxX054bjdXRUx6ZlN0cnFBP3J0aW1lPWFmWFMxcjUwMkVn

This paper was very interesting, it discussed the MDA framework which is used for game design. The MDA framework stands for -

M- Mechanics.

D- Dynamics.

A- Aesthetics.

  • Mechanics describes the particular components of the game, at the level of data representation and algorithms.
  • Dynamics describes the run-time behaviour of the Mechanics acting on player inputs and each other’s outputs over time.
  • Aesthetics describes  the  desirable  emotional  responses  evoked  in  the  player,  when  she interacts with the game system.

The MDA framework was designed by Robin et.al and he made this framework to help clarify the game design process for developers, scholars and resourcers and to make it easier for them to design games.

This framework is widely known and is used by many when designing and developing a new game. It lets designers identify the weaknesses of their game and overcome them.

The mechanics of a game are as follow: Game Code, Game Rules, World Disruption, Style, Functional Interface and the Content Interface.

The design elements of a game are the blueprints, the mechanics and the interface put together and the dynamics are what happens when the game starts and how everything works together.

The aesthetics are very important in the game world to make sure that an emotional response is evoked from the players.

The MDA framework had a lot of trial and error, and saw many changes over the years and had many different subheadings added and new concepts of the MDA were seen, this expanded the whole concept of the MDA framework.

One of these subheadings was DDE, design, dynamics and experience of games. This is said to have been an attempt to overcome the different weaknesses that the MDA framework had. This is still said to be a work in progress and that the whole framework will undergo many changes and developments in the future and terminology may change and it will need to adapt to many changes.

The video I watched also was all about the MDA framework- https://youtu.be/NxiGduvDJ8s

The video was very informative. In the video, the man explains the MDA Model in more detail and tell us that this model is used when breaking down games to show what is good in that game. It is also used to break games down into categories.

This video explains the MDA framework more easily by giving examples of what is at each step.

Mechanics make up the rules, the controls, the actions, and are the basic building blocks for your game.

The dynamics are made from the mechanics, they are built upon these and are known as the constructive building blocks for your game.

And the aesthetic of the game is the emotional response that we as the player get when playing a game. The aesthetics break down into 8 subheadings, these are

Sensation.

Fantasy.

Narrative.

Challenge.

Fellowship.

Discovery.

Expression.

& Submission.

The MDA framework is used to help designers make the best game possible.
