For this week's reading task I decided to start off with the video the video was called "Telling stories with systems" - https://youtu.be/NyMndWpihTM and it was all about the use of story design in video games. From this video I found out that it's very important to design a story that is interactive and that will allow players to make decisions and to not just have them made for them. games need this element for them to be efficient and to make people want to play their games. I'm not a gamer at all so I was quite lost in this video with the game language and the man in the YouTube video referred to a lot of games that I am not familiar with at all so I found it very hard to understand where he was coming from but what I got out of the video was that you need to have an interactive game where the player can make those decisions for themselves and that your story design needs to be well thought out and works with your game. When creating a story for your game it's important to make sure that there are many different outcomes so that each player does not have the same outcome and its important to make sure that they can make decisions along the way that will impact how the game ends. it's important not to have a predictable game either or to repeat certain elements just in different ways. the importance of conflict is also shown in this video which is something that I have learned about in prior reading tasks and I know that it's important to have a game with conflict because this brings more to your game.
I then read the 1st paper which was called what every game developer needs to know about story, and this was an article that summarised a book by Robert McKee and the book was called "Story"- https://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/130770/what_every_game_developer_needs_to_.php. I found this article very interesting and I learned a lot about how to come up with a story for your video game. In this article it too like the video explains that conflict is a big element of story. I also found it very interesting that the author of this book had never played a video game in his life which is like me and I thought it was interesting to hear from the perspective of someone who doesn't play video games and how much knowledge they still have on story and that shows that story can be used in many different ways not just video games. in the article it explains how classic stories move on it says that stories work when they're simple and when they work and also there needs to be structure to the story and it needs to show creativity. also it's important to have acts in your story, I found out that three acts is the minimum for a story and it's a good goal to set for your game to have three acts so a start middle and end of the game. This article also explains like the video that a character is important in your video game and your story and that the character needs to be able to choose what they do and You must ask the character and player questions so that they can decipher what outcome they will have in the game.
